What
happens if your valuable stud dog gets sick, goes sterile or even suddenly dies – maybe much too soon?
Problems with semen is a much more common problem than you would
think. You would wish
you had frozen your dog when he was at his prime and have the best quality frozen semen from him stored away for future use.
Or, maybe you just want to have frozen semen from a stud living far away, ready
to use whenever you need it, when Chilled Semen transport is not an alternative.
Since 1983 CLONE INC. has the quality and
the most advanced technology that has been proven over and over
again, year after year. CLONE INC. is still the leading company
in frozen semen in the world, with CLONE associates in
England, Germany, France, Italy, Holland, Sweden, Norway,
Finland, New Zealand, Canada, Argentina, and Brazil.

CLONE has an exceptionally high conception rate for ex. 91 % in Labrador Retrievers and we use trans-cervical inseminations - not surgery. An example of how well the CLONE Frozen Semen works is the fact that 65 litters have whelped from Frozen Semen shipped to CLONE Finland from the United States, with only 2 misses.
As the thawed Frozen Semen has to be deposited right into the uterus - a Regular Insemination will not do that. The inseminations techniques used with Frozen Semen are:
One of the largest CLONE litters has been 17 Foxhounds puppies and was as usual inseminated once, using the Trans-Cervical technique with the Norwegian Catheter.
THE CLONE SYSTEM OF
FREEZING SEMEN
The system
Dr. George Govette developed in the beginning of the 1980's to
freeze semen, is absolutely unique. Behind the method lies a long
time of research to find the best way of freezing and also
for semen
identification and storage system. For this CLONE
developed its own extender solutions for preparing and preserving the
semen as well as for thawing out the semen. These
solutions are one
of the major factors that makes the CLONE system different from all
other systems available. The solutions have been developed after
many years of intense research and are evaluated and ameliorated all the time.
These solutions are available strictly from CLONE INC in USA but are
used for freezing in all Clone Centers around the world. The
identification and storage system are also uniform in all Clone
facilities so you can be sure to have the same quality throughout
the line wherever you are.
With the CLONE method of freezing the motility of the semen is generally over 70% after dethawing. With other methods the motility rates of dethawed semen is often about 40 – 50 % and even lower. Research has shown that the fertility rate starts to decline rapidly after the motility of the post thawed semen decreases below 50 %. Also the semen frozen by CLONE maintain their motility for up to 3 days after dethawing, in refrigerator temperatures. With other methods there is virtually no motility one day after dethawing the semen. These features significantly affect the rate of success.
1. Once the semen is collected it is evaluated thoroughly and processed by centrifuging to separate the sperm cells from the other fluids that were collected. These fluids are then drawn off, leaving only the sperm cells and a small amount of seminal fluid behind. This is done to avoid the problems with some studs that have blood, contaminates or prostate fluid that may have toxic effects on the semen. If we assume that all dogs could have problems associated with their semen, by removing all the prostate and/or supportive fluids from the semen collection we can control and ensure that all semen processed will be as uniform as possible.
2. The semen is then prepared with the different solutions that Clone developed specially for this, to preserve the semen and to eliminate the eventual damage the freezing might do to the sperm cells. The prepared semen is then evaluated once again to see how well it responded to the preparation. The semen often shows a great improvement and is thus a better semen for freezing and will therefore give a better post freezing quality.
3. The straws are marked with the number of the dog, an identification letter of the straw, the date of freezing, the breed of the dog and the registration number of the dog. All this has been found to be very important for the identification of the semen and no mix ups are possible as the ID is checked on the straw before the thawing.
Why straws? CLONE has also tried freezing in pellets and though the quality of the semen frozen in pellets is relatively good, the system lacks in security as the pellets can not be identified, only the vials they are in and there lies a great risk of a possible mix. With straws - no mix up is possible.Straw with identification of stud dog:
A300-A
MAR 12-98
IRISH WOLFHOUND

4. The prepared semen is drawn in .5 ml. straws with approx. 75-100 milj. sperm cells per straw and then frozen in liquid nitrogen at -196 C. The usual breeding unit in this way is normally only 2 straws per breeding. Inseminating larger quantities would be a waste of semen in the vaginal tract. As the most fertile time of the bitch is pinpointed by an accurate progesterone test, only one breeding is usually necessary. How many straws you get from one collection depends on the stud dog and the breed and can vary as bigger dogs usually give much more sperm than smaller breeds.
5. The frozen semen straws are then stored according to the CLONE storage system which is ingenious and permits to find and identify a particular dogs frozen semen in a very simple way without any possible mix ups.
! IMPORTANT !
CLONE sees to that the semen stored is and stays your property legally, until you agree and sign for any use of it. This means that, every time any transaction is done with the semen, for any inseminations done, for any shipments, or for any transfer of ownerships of any amount of breeding units, the initiative should come from you and CLONE will have you sign a special form for this and therewith agree to the transaction in question. You will always - and should always - have the total control of your semen.
The procedure for freezing, storing, shipping and using the semen, is simple for you and perfectly safe for the valuable semen of your stud dog:
1. Call your nearest CLONE Full Service Office and arrange a time for the freezing of your stud dog.
2. You can do several collections at any time, to be sure to have enough of top quality semen for the future, of your stud dog.
3. The semen can then be stored in the CLONE Center nearest to you, or it can be shipped to any CLONE Center in the world. You can also ship just a certain amount for a certain amount of breedings. Different countries have different rules for importing frozen semen and some countries also claim some blood work to be done on the stud dog when the semen is frozen so you must know this already at the time of the freezing.
4. In this way your stud dogs semen will be perfectly preserved and safe for at least a life time and of course, usable anytime you want.
